Yemen: tomorrow's war

By: Elson Concepcion

Havana, Cuba. – Joe Lieberman, former candidate to US Vice-presidency and current chairman of the Internal Security Committee, just said: “Iraq is yesterday's war, Afghanistan is todays and Yemen is tomorrow’s war.”

Nothing good can be expected from such a statement. This administration seems intent on reaching 2010 with a new war scenario in the Republic of Yemen. This time the soldiers will be commanded by a Nobel Prize, Barack Obama.

In Iraq, allegedly yesterday's war, 125 000 US soldiers are still stranded in their 7th year.

The so-called Pentagon’s antiterrorist crusade keeps more than 70 000 militaries in Afghanistan. That is another war increasingly complicated for the foreign aggressors.

Pakistan is another front opened by Washington. With the pretext of fighting Al Qaeda, Obama’s administration has launched a campaign of indiscriminate bombings that have caused countless civil casualties.

Now, Washington bets on Yemen and has opened another front there, the 4th in my view, although some agencies speak of a third.

The New York Times informed last Monday that the Pentagon will spend over $ 70 millions in Yemen during the next 18 months, where it has quietly opened a new war scenario, secret to a large extent.

The Pentagon is planning to use Special Forces detachments to train and supply military gear to the Yemeni Army, Ministry of Interior and Coastguard. The above-mentioned newspaper claims that this is tantamount to doubling the military assistance provided so far.

The publication, quoted by EFE News Agency, refers that “One year ago, the CIA sent to Yemen some of its best agents with experience in the struggle against terrorism.”

I must say that Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab world.

This proves that US plan to wage wars, invade and occupy countries, takes its highest death toll from civilians, particularly the poorest population settlements. It happened first in Iraq and then in Afghanistan. They have created great unrest in Pakistan and now they are doing the same in Yemen.

These are the targets of the crusade started by Bush and continued now by Obama.
