Havana Province,
Cuba. – Baseball player Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and cyclist
Marley Mejias were elected the best athletes of Havana Province
in 2009. The election took place in a meeting with local sport
journalists, held in the premises of the Provincial Sports Department.
Gonzalez, from the municipality of Mariel, thrived in the last
National Series and did even better in the playoffs (5-0). Mejias,
the cyclist, is from Güira de Melena. Both stood out for
their international performance in 2009.
The condition of Rookie of the Year was conferred to Dennis
Laza, another baseball player, from San Jose de las Lajas. He
was a member of Havana Province team, current national champion,
and excelled in the playoffs of the 2008-2009 season.
The best ten athletes of Havana Province in 2009 were announced
in the above-mentioned meeting, including Yulieski Gonzalez,
Jonder Martinez and Leinier Dominguez.
