Havana Province, Cuba. - In Santa Cruz del
Norte, 85 years-old housewife Georgina Gomez confessed to
me that she still regards the dawn of January 1 1959 as a
dream. Her eyes lock in a crack of the ceiling. She seems
to go back to the past along the crossroads of time, but then
returns to the present. She remembers Juana, her neighbor,
yelling at her at 6:00 in the morning to tell her that Batista
was gone.
Octogenarian Bienvenido Diaz, from
Jaruco, assures that it was an unforgettable dawn. He claims
that philosophers and historians will elaborate on Fidel Castro’s
feats for centuries to come. Half a century after the victorious
daybreak, he thinks that the Commander revolutionized the
world with his innovative thinking.
But not only aging Cubans comment
on this historical event. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, young right-handed
star of Havana Province baseball team, affirms that Cuban
Revolution is Light. The tall pitcher wishes a prosperous
2010 to all the baseball fans of his province, particularly
to his neighbors in Mariel.
Cigar roller Laura Rodriguez affirms
that the change requested by the foes of the Revolution and
Fidel happened 50 years ago when Fulgencio Batista’s
murderous dictatorship was overthrown. Discrimination, racketeering,
misery, hunger and the precarious life in the city and countryside
all came to an end in the island.
The truth is that Revolution
is Light.
