Windmills improve economy in Havana Province farm
Back to English Versions Page

By: Francisco Martinez Chao

Havana Province, Cuba. – The grazing areas of “Crucero Aurora” Agricultural Cooperative have had 6 windmills operating for almost 2 years. They pump out drinking water for over 1 000 cattle heads, mostly zebu and buffaloes.

The machines also guarantee, by means of the millennial method of canals, the irrigation of a large vegetables plantation, next to the ranch where the cattle, particularly pregnant cows, is lodged.

This ecological alternative is implemented in a farm of the municipality of Jaruco, in Havana Province, about 50 kilometers northeast of the Cuban capital. Those windmills save around 30 000 pesos in taxes and transportation of the vital fluid in cistern cars with diesel engines.

Each windmill has a tank or water trough and a reservoir with capacity for 30 000 liters of water. The system can thus be disconnected every 8 hours, which prolongs the useful life of each windmill.

According to the technological chart of the Argentinean maker, the first overhaul is scheduled for the 10th year of uninterrupted operation. Furthermore, in case of a tropical storm, the windmill can be dismantled in barely 2 working hours.
