Havana Province, Cuba. – Members of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and workers of the “Maximo Gomez” Thermoelectric Power Plant participated today in a massive journey of voluntary blood donation. The blood will be given to Cuban Ministry of Health Care, as a solidarity contribution to the Haitian people, in the aftermath of the catastrophe they have just suffered.
Eliecer Machado, president of, highlighted the significance of this remarkable the “Jose Antonio Echeverria” detachment initiative. The plant has a staff of 873 workers, of which 127 belong to the detachment. Therefore, 2009 was a stage of higher contributions to this humane mission. Their goal for 2010 is reaching the figure of 200 donations.
This young man has been a grassroots leader for the last 12 years and president of CDR № 2 of Area 59, in Boca de Mariel. He stressed that this week will be decisive to fulfill the plan in salutation of July 26. He added that the members of his group are highly motivated and willing to give their blood for Haiti.
He said: “This gesture allows us to strengthen humanism and the solidarity spirit that reigns in Havana Province Thermoelectric Plant. This crew has received several CDR awards, as part of the emulation for this National Program that spreads further every year throughout the country.”
The Thermoelectric also stands out at the provincial level in trade union and productive work, in terms of contributions to the Energy Revolution and raw materials recovery. They also stood out in the battle for the eradication of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, through the work of the mosquito termination brigade in the center.
Machado also highlighted the care given to for voluntary blood donors. Last year, more than 500 workers underwent health checkups, particularly with regard to dentistry, high blood pressure and X-rays. This is a way to ensure the quality of the blood delivered to the Cuban Ministry of Health Care.
