Fighting evil for fifty years
By: Pedro
Norat Soto
Havana Province, Cuba. - There is not shaft that
can measure the moral stature of the Cuban people.
There is no numeric magnitude that can accurately
reflect the political will of the Cubans; their
unyielding determination to live in freedom and
continue along the path opened on January 1 1959.
To confirm it, it would be enough to take a calm
and passionless look at the developments of the
last fifty years of our History.
This half century lapsed in the heat of a new
type of society, built by a Revolution that many
still find amazing all over the world.
Such a huge feat was attained in spite of the
opposition of the largest and most ferocious empire
that humanity has ever known. They have spared
no efforts to crush our people´s resistance.
The economic, commercial and financial blockade
enforced by the United States against Cuba for
the last five decades is one of the meanest weapons
wielded in the course of 10 successive US governments.
Nothing has changed since the arrival to the White
House of President Barack Obama. This is an issue
where he has danced to the tune played by his
predecessors.
This measure is the highest expression of a cruel
and inhuman politics, devoid of legality and legitimacy.
It is deliberately designed to cause hunger, diseases
and despair in the Cuban population.
The international community distinctly opposes
it. The 17 resolutions adopted every year by UN
General Assembly, since 1992 prove it. Furthermore,
diverse intergovernmental forums and organizations,
as well as individual governments, have adopted
agreements and issued declarations that reject
the enactment and enforcement of this type of
measures.
The genocidal blockade will be rejected again
today, when the member countries of United Nations
adopt a new resolution against that blockade.
It will be the 18th consecutive year in which
the plenary of UN General Assembly debates US
siege on the Caribbean island. It is already taken
for granted that, once again, the draft resolution
will be adopted by an overwhelming majority.
That new victory will multiply the forces of the
Cubans that despite the blockade continue their
march along the paths of socialism.
