Havana Province, Cuba. - If we could fly at a low altitude over the Escaleras de Jaruco mountain range, we would see environmentalists of the Wildlife Preservation Enterprise working in the urgent task of reforestation.
By the end of last year, the 5 members’ brigade in that Protected Natural Landscape had planted in solid ground and hillsides nearly 35 000 seedlings of cedar, oak, ocujes, majaguas, and other varieties of precious wood.
This figure surpassed in 2% the plan for 2009, thanks to the biodiversity culture of that crew, whose planting program for the present year exceeds 20 000 seedlings.
The substantial improvement of the arboreal universe in Escaleras de Jaruco range, about 30 kilometers east of the capital city, facilitates the survival of Tocororos, woodpeckers, Cartacubas, Jutias and Santamaria snakes. These are all endangered species, threatened by the poachers that marauded around that park.
The truth is that green and its infinite shades are like a sonata of life in this exuberant portion of Havana Province, thanks to the passion of a quintet protective of Mother Nature.
