Havana, Cuba. – The international press, United Nations
and some governments of rich countries have given different
readings to what happened in the Copenhagen Summit on Climate
Change.
But, the reality was too overwhelming. No matter how hard they
try to justify the failure, they cannot hide the chaos in the
meeting and the vulnerability of a world dominated by market
interests and imperial hegemony.
The reports have denounced that US position could not be more
arrogant and antidemocratic. President Barack Obama appeared
in Denmark’s capital city as a ghost from the dark cold
night and gave his document to the empire’s errand boys,
who tried to impose it later.
Once again, the governments of ALBA member countries and the
Group of 77 raised their voice with strength and dignity to
denounce the outrage.
But there were also rulers and UN high officials that consented
to the scam and after they failed to prevail, “took note”
of the apocryphal document.
Nevertheless, even Obama’s most loyal lackeys had to admit
that his document does not define time limits, maximum emissions
and clear objectives for their reduction, among other omissions.
In the case of Latin America and the Caribbean, the dramatic
situation of climate change was assumed with responsibility
by those who demanded urgent measures to stop the deterioration.
To that end, it was impossible to accept middle grounds after
so many hours, days and nights of analysis and discussions.
According to data filtered in Copenhagen, Latin America only
has to do with 12% of the world emissions of greenhouse gases,
but it is particularly vulnerable to a global warming of 2 degrees.
Reportedly, four areas are extremely exposed to climate change
in the region. One of them encompasses the countries in the
Amazons basin, like Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Brazil.
They could suffer atrocious consequences of water deterioration
and forest degradation.
Other Andean states, like Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
and Bolivia will suffer the warming of that mountain range.
On the other hand, the smaller islands and coastal areas of
the Caribbean region will be particularly affected by rising
sea level and premature collapse of the coral reefs ecosystem.
Many Central America countries, like Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize
and Mexico will be likewise exposed to increasing extreme weather
conditions.
In light of that reality, the imposition of documents that neither
mention the true causes of climate change, nor outline even
a single measure for its solution, cannot be accepted under
any circumstance.
