Havana Province,
Cuba. – Revolution Heroine Melba Hernandez participated
in the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the town of Ben
Tre, in the municipality of Bauta. Officials of the Vietnam
embassy in Cuba and Cuban Friendship Institute accompanied her.
The community was founded, upon her proposal, for workers of
“Niña Bonita” Livestock Breeding Company.
Livestock development started four decades ago in the area,
with the assistance of Vietnamese specialists. It was named
after Ben Tre, the first territory liberated from Yankee occupation
in that Asian country. It is a symbol of the friendship between
both peoples.
The celebration was propitious to inaugurate the “40 Years
of History” Exhibition. The works of four local artists
are displayed at the “Ho Chi Minh” Museum House.
The patrimonial center also shows paintings, photographs and
handicraft objects from the sisterly country’s culture.
This township of Bauta, founded 40 yearsago, on December 20,
possesses other treasures. One of them is a piece of sculptress
Rita Longa. It is a monument to work and the fraternity between
Cuba and Vietnam. A young Vietnamese girl, adorned with typical
shirt and hat, carries a rice ear in her hand; while a Cuban
girl fondly caresses a calf that trails behind her.
In 1969, the settlement accommodated 41 families. Today, the
population surpasses 700 inhabitants, with the corresponding
growth in the number of houses. It also has a school, a trade
center, medical clinic, cafeteria and other services.
